Commercial Margin & Pricing Principles

Gross Margin vs. Markup on Cost

Importers and retailers frequently confuse margin with markup, leading to severe underpricing:

  • Gross Margin (%) is the percentage of selling price that remains after deducting product landed costs: Margin = (Price - Cost) / Price. A 50% gross margin means you keep $0.50 of every $1.00 in revenue.
  • Markup on Cost (%) is the percentage added to your landed unit cost: Markup = (Price - Cost) / Cost. A 100% markup on a $10 cost yields a $20 selling price (which corresponds to a 50% gross margin).

Accounting for Channel Commissions and CAC

Selling through third-party platforms (Amazon FBA, wholesale distributors, or Shopify DTC) introduces distinct expense structures:

  • Platform Take Rates: Marketplaces typically assess 8% to 15% referral commissions on top of fixed order transaction charges.
  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): In DTC e-commerce, paid advertising often accounts for 20% to 35% of gross revenue. Your landed cost must leave sufficient contribution margin to absorb acquisition volatility.
  • Fixed Overhead Amortization: Production tooling, compliance testing, and inspection travel should be amortized across realistic initial production batches rather than multi-year hypothetical forecasts.

Break-Even Volume Mechanics

Your contribution margin per unit (Selling Price minus all variable costs) determines the exact minimum sales volume needed to avoid an overall commercial loss on an import consignment.
