Shipping Cost & Chargeable Weight Estimator

Audit international freight forwarder quotes, model volumetric dimensional weight rules (IATA 1:5000 and 1:6000), and evaluate terminal port handling fees across Air Express, Air Cargo, Ocean LCL, and FCL.

International Freight Cost & Chargeable Weight Estimator

Calculate volumetric weight across Air Express, Air Cargo, and Ocean LCL. Compare freight quotes, port handling fees, and per-unit transport expenses.

Transparency Notice: All calculations are computed from user-entered carrier quotes, dimensional parameters, and official IATA/WCO volumetric divisors (1:5000 for express, 1:6000 for standard air, 1 CBM : 1,000 kg for sea LCL). No simulated or fabricated market rates are used.

Forwarder Negotiation Guidance

Watch for Hidden Destination DTHC: Forwarders offering low ocean or air base rates often compensate by inflating destination warehouse deconsolidation fees ($200-$500 per shipment). Always demand an itemized door-to-door quotation before booking.
Optimize Package Density: If your volumetric weight exceeds actual weight, you are paying for empty air. Reducing carton height by just 5 cm can reduce chargeable air freight costs significantly.

Understanding Freight Rating & Volumetric Weight Mechanics

The Volumetric (Dimensional) Weight Rule

Carriers do not bill solely on scale weight. Because cargo space on aircraft and container vessels is physically limited, light but bulky cargo takes up disproportionate cubic space. Transportation providers use a mathematical conversion factor known as the volumetric divisor:

  • Air Express Couriers (DHL, FedEx, UPS): Standard divisor is 5,000 cm³/kg (or 139 cu in/lb). Dimensional weight is computed as: (Length × Width × Height in cm × Packages) ÷ 5,000.
  • Commercial Air Cargo (IATA Standard): Standard airline tariff uses 6,000 cm³/kg (equivalent to 1 cubic meter = 166.67 kg). If the volumetric weight exceeds actual scale weight, the airline bills on the volumetric figure.
  • Ocean LCL (Less-than-Container Load): Billed on a "Weight or Measurement" (W/M) basis where 1 Cubic Meter (CBM) = 1,000 kg (1 Metric Ton). If your 2 CBM cargo weighs 500 kg, you pay for 2 Revenue Tons. If it weighs 2,400 kg, you pay for 2.4 Revenue Tons.

Common Forwarder Surcharges to Audit

The headline port-to-port ocean or airport-to-airport air rate frequently represents less than 65% of your total invoice. Ensure your quotation explicitly itemizes:

  • Origin Documentation & CFS Charges: Origin container freight station (CFS) receiving, export customs declaration, and terminal entry fees.
  • Destination Terminal Handling Charges (DTHC): Unloading, devanning, and deconsolidation at destination marine or air terminals. Ocean LCL forwarders often artificially discount ocean freight and dramatically inflate DTHC upon arrival.
  • Customs Entry & Filing: U.S. ISF (10+2) filing, single-entry or continuous customs bond, and customs broker entry preparation fees.
  • Inland Drayage / Last-Mile Delivery: Final trucking from the port deconsolidation warehouse to your commercial receiving dock, including liftgate or residential surcharges where applicable.
