Managing International Cargo Milestones
Key Documents to Record Per Shipment
- Bill of Lading (B/L) Number: The master ocean freight document evidencing receipt and title of goods. Original B/Ls must be endorsed and surrendered to release cargo.
- House Airway Bill (HAWB) or Master AWB: Air freight equivalent. Usually released as a non-negotiable document; cargo is released against passport or authorization letter.
- Container Number: Standard ISO format (4 letters + 6 digits + 1 check digit, e.g. CSNU8841927). Used to track individual containers on vessel tracking portals.
- ISF/AMS Filing Reference: US importers are required to file Importer Security Filing (ISF 10+2) at least 24 hours before departure.
Understanding Transit Times
- China to US West Coast (Ocean FCL): Approximately 12–18 days transit, plus 3–5 days port terminal processing at Los Angeles / Long Beach.
- China to US East Coast (All-Water via Panama Canal): Approximately 25–35 days transit.
- China to Europe (North Sea Range): Approximately 25–30 days via Suez Canal route.
- Air Freight (China to USA): 3–6 business days airport to airport, plus 1–2 days customs clearance.
